Ive only partied with a few PUPs since they came out, so perhaps im in no position to pass judgement, however I have felt that PUPs dont really seem to be up to the job of being a DD in parties, theyre certainly no tank, and most definitely not a healer. They seem to lack any significant contribution to the game, so I wonder to myself what is its purpose in FFXI?
Was it implemented as an alternative to BST after its primary playstyle was dealt a blow with the MPK patch? Is PUP really just that bad in parties?

From what I can gather, PUPs tend to assume the role of a pseudo-MNK, using baghnaks and a somewhat low hand-to-hand skill; from experience, this tends to be somewhat sub par.
I wouldnt mind this so much if they utilised their puppets to a full extent, but it seems to me the puppets themselves arent particularly useful, they cast a random debuff or weak nuke on the mage one, do some minor melee damage on the melee versions. Im entirely informed on the mechanics of the puppets, but they seem pretty weak so far.

supposedly i heard from some people that PUPs are a altered version of a DRG, they could just be saying this because its just a person with a pet, but what are the actual abilities of the puppet, are they activated by pet abilities or by actions taken by the puppetmaster. like for dragoons the wyverns abilities depends on the sub job and if its a mage job, it is activated by the dragoon using a spell, and it can range from many things such as healing to removing ailments, which is always a very nice feature. Subbing a melee job causes the wyvern to use elemental attack breaths when the dragoon uses his/her weaponskill. If they are similiar to dragoons of course they are OK in my book well thats my few on them even though it kinda turned into a convo about dragoons lol. o well u know where my love lies

Even so, if they are another DRG type job, I feel that S-E have run low on ideas, and were just pumping it out for the sake of the expansion. I mean... DRGs are unpopular as it is XD
Anyway, from experience, all three jobs of the new expansion have tried to assume the roles of DDs in the party situation, with the exception of CORs who buff occasionally; most of the CORs I party with try to be some form of pseudo-RNG, which I find quite annoying when I want my Hunter's Roll! Anyway, the point is, if not a tad off topic, they all seem to be DDs, and not particularly well defined as them, maybe thats just how people are playing them, but there were too many DDs to begin with. We needed another tank if you ask me...

Drg are unpopular because not only did they get hit with the nerf stick, but they got the shit kicked out of them with the damn nerf stick. There was a time when they were the best DD job by far, anyone who wanted to be a DD was drg. But when SE nerfed them they really nerfed them, not like rangers who just got a bit weaker but are still good. They sent drg fromt he best DD to the worst.
More recent updates have improved on drg (partly by not makign their fagile drg a 2hr ability). Now a drg can at least compaire to a drk, gaxe war, or most anyone else with a large delay weapon. Unfortunently SE still has a long way to go to replace the sam sub and make 2h weapons on par to 1h weapons.... maybe in the next expansion.
